Florida Flag Fish: Best Algae-Eating Fish for Freshwater Aquariums
Why We Use Florida Flag Fish for Algae Control at D&G Farms
As a licensed Florida aquaculture farm that has raised and shipped freshwater fish for decades, we've tested many methods of controlling algae in outdoor fish systems. One fish we continue to use is the Florida Flag Fish (Jordanella floridae). Their combination of algae-grazing behavior, hardiness, and attractive coloration has made them a long-time favorite on our farm.
Florida Flag Fish are native to Florida and are well known for their ability to graze on algae. At D&G Farms, we routinely use them in outdoor pools and vats where they spend their days constantly picking at algae growth on tank walls, liners, and other surfaces.
While no fish will completely eliminate algae problems, Florida Flag Fish have proven to be one of the most useful native species we keep for helping manage algae in outdoor systems.
What Makes Florida Flag Fish Different?
Unlike many algae-eating fish sold in the aquarium hobby, Florida Flag Fish are hardy, adaptable, and capable of thriving in a wide range of conditions. They tolerate outdoor Florida temperatures well and readily breed in captivity.
Male Florida Flag Fish are among the most colorful native freshwater fish in North America, displaying red, white, and blue markings that inspired the common name "American Flag Fish."
More Than Just an Algae Eater
In addition to their algae-grazing behavior, Florida Flag Fish are:
- Native to Florida
- Easy to breed
- Suitable for aquariums and outdoor ponds
- Hardy and adaptable
- Interesting to observe
D&G Farms Observation
We routinely use Florida Flag Fish in our outdoor pools and vats as part of our algae management program. Their constant grazing behavior is one of the reasons they remain a regular part of our farm operation.
