Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish Care Guide: Tank Setup, Feeding, Breeding & Tank Mates

Introduction

The Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish (CPO) has become one of the most popular freshwater invertebrates in the aquarium hobby. Their bright orange color, active behavior, and small size make them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. At D&G Farms, we have bred and shipped thousands of these fascinating crayfish to hobbyists across the United States.

What Is a Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish?

The Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish (Cambarellus patzcuarensis "Orange"), often called a CPO Crayfish, is a selectively bred orange variety of a naturally occurring dwarf crayfish from Mexico. Unlike larger crayfish species, CPOs stay small enough to be kept in many community aquariums.

Size and Lifespan

Most adult Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish reach approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in length. With proper care, they can live for 18 to 24 months and may breed readily in home aquariums.

Tank Requirements

CPO Crayfish do best in aquariums that provide:

  • Stable water quality
  • Plenty of hiding places
  • Sponge filters or gentle filtration
  • Temperature between 68°F and 78°F
  • pH between 6.8 and 8.0

Aquarium plants, caves, driftwood, and rock structures provide excellent cover during molting.

What Do CPO Crayfish Eat?

Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish are omnivores and will readily accept:

  • Sinking pellets
  • Algae wafers
  • Blanched vegetables
  • Frozen foods
  • Fish food flakes

A varied diet helps promote healthy growth, successful molts, and breeding activity.

Can They Live With Fish?

One reason CPO Crayfish are so popular is their relatively peaceful nature. While no crayfish is completely risk-free, CPOs are generally safer with community fish than larger crayfish species.

Good tankmates may include:

  • Guppies
  • Endlers
  • Corydoras
  • Tetras
  • Rasboras
  • Snails

Very small shrimp may occasionally be preyed upon.

Breeding Mexican Orange Dwarf Crayfish

Breeding CPO Crayfish is one of the most rewarding aspects of keeping them. Females carry eggs under their tails until the young hatch. The babies emerge as miniature versions of the adults and can often be raised successfully with proper filtration and regular feeding.
