Florida Flag Fish (Jordanella floridae)
The Florida Flag Fish, also known as the American Flag Fish, is a native Florida species prized for its striking coloration, algae-eating ability, and suitability for planted aquariums, outdoor ponds, and community aquariums.
Why Is It Called the American Flag Fish?
The Florida Flag Fish gets its common name from the male's distinctive red, white, and blue coloration, which resembles the colors of the American flag. Mature males develop bright turquoise-green scales, red striping, and a dark shoulder spot that make them one of North America's most colorful native freshwater fish.
Male vs Female Florida Flag Fish
Males display brighter red, blue, and green coloration and are generally more territorial. Females are smaller and typically display a dark spot near the dorsal fin.
Florida Flag Fish Size
Adult Florida Flag Fish typically reach 2 to 3 inches in length, with males often growing slightly larger than females.
Native Range
Florida Flag Fish are native to Florida and occur naturally in vegetated ponds, lakes, marshes, canals, sloughs, and slow-moving waterways throughout much of the state. They are endemic to Florida and are one of the few native North American aquarium fish commonly kept by aquarium hobbyists.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 68–78°F
pH: 6.5–8.0
Hardness: Moderate to Hard
Diet
Florida Flag Fish readily consume algae, biofilm, quality pellets, frozen foods, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables.
Do Florida Flag Fish Eat Hair Algae?
Florida Flag Fish are widely regarded as one of the best freshwater fish for controlling hair algae and black beard algae. They constantly graze algae from plant leaves, aquarium glass, decorations, and hardscape surfaces throughout the day.
Aquarium Compatibility
Florida Flag Fish are suitable for community aquariums with similarly sized fish but may become territorial toward slow-moving or long-finned tank mates.
Pond Suitability
Florida Flag Fish adapt well to outdoor ponds and water gardens throughout much of Florida. Their hardiness and natural algae-grazing behavior make them popular choices for planted ponds and outdoor water features.
Breeding Florida Flag Fish
Florida Flag Fish are egg-laying fish. Males establish territories and court females into spawning areas where eggs are deposited among plants and hard surfaces.
