Care Requirements

  • Scientific Name: Oreochromis mossambicus
  • Adult Size: can reach 12–16 inches or more
  • Temperature: 78–86°F for warm-water grow-out
  • pH: stable neutral to moderately alkaline water
  • Water Hardness: moderate; adequate buffering
  • Tank Size: Nursery space for fry followed by a properly sized grow-out system or contained pond
  • Temperament: Juveniles form groups; breeding males defend territory
  • Setup: Use aeration and effective filtration, and adjust stocking as biomass increases.
  • Diet: Complete tilapia feeds of appropriate pellet size; monitor feeding response and growth.
  • Compatibility: Keep similar-sized fish together and manage territorial breeders separately.

Use a fully cycled aquarium, stable water conditions, and regular water changes. Plan space for the animals as they grow.
