Crayfish Care Guides

Mexican Dwarf Crayfish and Electric Blue Crayfish differ greatly in adult size and compatibility. Choose the guide that matches your crayfish rather than applying one set of rules to both.

General Care

Use a fully cycled freshwater aquarium with aeration, a secure lid, and covered cable openings. Give every crayfish several hiding places, particularly for molting. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and change water regularly. Stable, mineral-containing water and a varied diet support shell growth. Do not disturb a crayfish during a molt; leave a clean shed shell for it to consume. Feed directly rather than relying on leftovers. Check medication labels for invertebrate safety, especially copper treatments.

Tank sizes below are planning recommendations for adult care. Aquarium footprint, group size, filtration, and individual behavior can require more space. Use stable conditions within the listed range; avoid sudden changes.

Species and Variety Guides

Mexican Dwarf Crayfish / CPO

  • Scientific name / group: Cambarellus patzcuarensis
  • Adult size: about 1.5–2 inches
  • Temperature: 68–75°F
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Water hardness: moderate; avoid very soft water
  • Aquarium: 10 gallons for a small pair; larger colonies need more floor space and cover
  • Temperament: Relatively mild for a crayfish; still territorial

Aquarium setup: Provide numerous small caves, moss, plants, and a sponge-protected filter intake.

Feeding: Sinking invertebrate pellets, vegetables, and occasional suitable protein foods.

Tank mates: Peaceful small fish may work, but predation and nipping remain possible. A species setup is best for raising young.

Breeding: Females carry eggs under the tail. Add dense cover and a separate grow-out space to reduce cannibalism.

  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Water hardness: moderate
