Guppy & Endler Care Guides
The currently listed Japanese, Tiger, and Blue Star Endlers share the care below. This page covers those listed strains; a color name alone does not establish that a strain is genetically pure Poecilia wingei.
General Care
Use a mature, planted aquarium with stable, mineral-containing water. Endlers are small enough to become prey for many otherwise peaceful fish. Provide a covered aquarium and a protected filter intake for young. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and prevent overcrowding as the colony grows.
Tank sizes below are planning recommendations for adult care. Aquarium footprint, group size, filtration, and individual behavior can require more space. Use stable conditions within the listed range; avoid sudden changes.
Species and Variety Guides
Japanese, Tiger, and Blue Star Endlers
- Scientific name / group: Poecilia wingei and domestic Endler strains; ancestry varies by strain
- Adult size: males about 1 inch; females larger
- Temperature: 75–80°F
- pH: 7.0–8.5
- Water hardness: moderately hard to hard
- Aquarium: 10 gallons for a small group; 20 gallons or larger for a growing colony
- Temperament: Peaceful; very active
Aquarium setup: Plants, fine cover, and gentle filtration give young fish shelter.
Feeding: Fine flakes or micro-pellets with some plant content; supplement with tiny frozen or live foods.
Tank mates: Use similarly small, gentle companions. Keep away from guppies when preserving a breeding line because they can hybridize.
Breeding: Livebearers reproduce readily. Keep more females than males and move surplus young to a grow-out tank. An all-male display avoids new broods.
