Central American Cichlids Care Guides
Central American cichlids vary widely in adult size and aggression. Rainbow Cichlids and Firemouths need different setups from Red Devils, Jaguars, and Dovii. Polar Parrots are ornamental hybrids rather than a wild species.
General Care
Use a mature aquarium, strong filtration, secure décor, and a tank sized for the adult fish. Provide cover and territory breaks, and keep a divider or separate tank available for incompatible fish. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and maintain a regular water-change routine. Cichlids may dig, move décor, and uproot plants. A breeding pair can become much more aggressive than either fish alone.
Tank sizes below are planning recommendations for adult care. Aquarium footprint, group size, filtration, and individual behavior can require more space. Use stable conditions within the listed range; avoid sudden changes.

Feeding: Small sinking cichlid pellets and varied suitable aquatic frozen foods.
Tank mates: Use appropriately sized, moderate companions; avoid highly aggressive large cichlids.
Breeding: Biparental substrate spawner. Give a pair a territory with a flat stone and room to retreat.

Nicaraguense / Macaw Cichlid

- Temperament: Territorial, particularly at spawning
Aquarium setup: Provide sand and roomy caves, with sightline breaks.
Feeding: Balanced cichlid pellets, plant material, and suitable frozen foods.
Tank mates: Avoid very aggressive cichlids; adult community setups need ample room.
Breeding: Cave spawner with non-adhesive eggs. Protect a compatible pair and do not disturb its breeding area.
Listed fish / animals: NICARAGUENSE CICHLID
Blue Carpintis / Pearlscale Cichlid
- Scientific name / group: Herichthys carpintis

Jaguar Cichlid
- Scientific name / group: Parachromis managuensis

Dovii / Wolf Cichlid
- Scientific name / group: Parachromis dovii
- Adult size: large males can exceed 24 inches

- Temperament: Extremely territorial predator
Aquarium setup: Plan a broad adult footprint, strong filtration, secure cover, and protected equipment before purchase.
Feeding: Large carnivorous-cichlid pellets with suitable aquatic frozen foods.
Tank mates: Solitary housing is safest. This is not a normal community cichlid, and juvenile size is misleading.
Breeding: Substrate spawner. Breeding pairs need exceptional space and specialist handling of aggression.
