Parachromis managuensis is a large species of cichlid native to freshwater habitats in Central America, where found from Honduras to Costa Rica. The scientific name refers to Lake Managua in Nicaragua from where the holotype was obtained.

Care Requirements

  • Scientific Name: Parachromis managuensis
  • Adult Size: large adults can reach 18 inches or more
  • Temperature: 74–77°F
  • pH: 6.5–8.0
  • Water Hardness: moderate
  • Tank Size: 180 gallons or larger with a broad footprint; large adults or pairs need more
  • Temperament: Large territorial predator
  • Setup: Provide strong filtration, open space, and sturdy cover; plan for adult bulk.
  • Diet: Carnivorous-cichlid pellets and suitable aquatic frozen foods. Live feeder fish are unnecessary.
  • Compatibility: Small fish are prey. Solitary housing is safer than assuming other aggressive species are compatible.

Use a fully cycled aquarium, stable water conditions, and regular water changes. Plan space for the animals as they grow.
