Tilapia Care Guides
Blue, Gold, and Mozambique Tilapia are grow-out and breeding fish rather than permanent nano-aquarium residents. Fry, fingerlings, and breeder colonies need different space and feeding plans as they grow.
General Care
Use a cycled aquarium or properly designed grow-out system with aeration, filtration, and secure containment. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero in home tanks and monitor dissolved oxygen in intensive systems; roughly 5 mg/L or higher is a useful operating aim. Size capacity by fish biomass, oxygen supply, and waste removal rather than a fixed fish-per-gallon rule. Feed a complete tilapia feed sized for the fish, in portions they actively consume. Warm-water growth does not mean cold-water survival is safe routine care. Verify current local possession and containment requirements and never release cultured fish.
Tank sizes below are planning recommendations for adult care. Aquarium footprint, group size, filtration, and individual behavior can require more space. Use stable conditions within the listed range; avoid sudden changes.
Species and Variety Guides
Blue Tilapia and Listed Gold Tilapia
- Scientific name / group: Oreochromis aureus; Gold stock is identified as O. aureus in our listing
- Adult size: can reach 12–18 inches under suitable conditions
- Temperature: 78–86°F for warm-water grow-out
- pH: stable neutral to moderately alkaline water
- Water hardness: moderate; adequate buffering supports filtration
- Aquarium: Fry can start in a nursery tank; adults need a large grow-out system, contained pond, or spacious adult aquarium
- Temperament: Schooling juveniles; breeding males become territorial
Aquarium setup: Provide reliable oxygenation, filtration, waste removal, and room to grade growing fish.
Feeding: Complete tilapia fry, fingerling, or grow-out feed sized to their mouths.
Tank mates: Keep growth groups of similar size; do not treat adult breeding fish as peaceful aquarium companions.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder. Breeder colonies need space for females to retreat and separate nursery capacity; Blue Tilapia are cold-tolerant relative to some tilapia, not cold-proof.

Mozambique Tilapia
- Scientific name / group: Oreochromis mossambicus
- Adult size: can reach 12–16 inches or more
- Temperature: 78–86°F for warm-water grow-out
- pH: stable neutral to moderately alkaline water
- Water hardness: moderate; adequate buffering
- Aquarium: Nursery space for fry followed by a properly sized grow-out system or contained pond
- Temperament: Juveniles form groups; breeding males defend territory
Aquarium setup: Use aeration and effective filtration, and adjust stocking as biomass increases.
Feeding: Complete tilapia feeds of appropriate pellet size; monitor feeding response and growth.
Tank mates: Keep similar-sized fish together and manage territorial breeders separately.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder that can reproduce prolifically. Separate nursery and grow-out capacity helps avoid overcrowding and stunting.
